Has anyone seen the series Locke and Key? The show recently received a second season renewal. Coby Bird, a gifted young man on the autism spectrum who has been on ABC’s “The Good Doctor” and “Speechless,” was cast as Rufus Whedon, Ellie Whedon’s adopted son and keeper of Keyhouse Manor’s estate. “After their father’s murder, three siblings go with their mother to his ancestral house, where they discover mystical keys that unlock powers — and secrets,” according to Netflix.
While the show never explicitly states that Rufus is autistic, several members of the autism community have told me how much they can connect to the character. “They never mention Rufus has any impairment,” Coby replied when I asked him about it. Coby does an excellent job in part, and I’m encouraged to see more people with autism pursue performing careers. When I was growing up with autism, theatre therapy was crucial to my growth since I struggled with communication and understanding other people’s viewpoints. I was in over 20 plays as a child, and now, as an adult, I work as an entertainment consultant, helping to bring an authentic portrayal of autism and other impairments to our entertainment business. I do this part-time while working full-time as a professional speaker who travels the world educating people about neurodiversity.
Individuals like Coby’s success inspires me to encourage our school system to consider adding the arts in discussions about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). We hope that by including the skills and calling it STEAM, we will help others understand that autism is a broad spectrum and that if you meet one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person.
Overall, I’d give this show my highest recommendation, and I hope that we may continue to encourage our loved ones to pursue professions in the arts if that is something they are interested in.
