Friday, February 2, 2024, is Groundhog Day. The grounds to Gobblers Knob open at 3 a.m., and thousands of people will go in person. Millions more will watch on TV to see if Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow on February 2.Every year.
WHAT DOES GROUNDHOG DAY MEAN?
Since February 2, 1987, Groundhog Day has been a tradition in the Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney every year. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s “Inner Circle” plans traditions and events every year. They also take care of and feed Punxsutawney Phil.
IF THE GROUNDHOG SEES HIS SHADOW, WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
Punxsutawney Phil says that winter will last for another six weeks if he sees his shadow. He perceives spring will come early if he doesn’t. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says that Phil has only been right about 40% of the time in the last ten years. In Phil’s defense, the NOAA said it is very hard to tell when spring will come to the whole United States.
EXPLAIN WHY PETA WANTS PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL TO BE TAKEN TO A SHELTER.
That January, PETA wrote to Tom Dunkel, who was in charge of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, to say that they were scared that the groundhog was being hurt for attention.
As an incentive for the Inner Circle to take the animal to a refuge, PETA offered to send the group “a giant coin” that “could easily replace him as the Pennsylvania town’s gimmick to draw in tourists.”
According to PETA, he is not a meteorologist and should not be used every year to get money from tourists.
That’s not the first time PETA has asked for Phil to be set free. In the past, they’ve offered to send a volunteer person to live in his pen and make the yearly winter prediction, or they’ve suggested putting a persimmon tree and an animatronic groundhog in its place.
