Mike Macdonald has been hired by the Seahawks to be their ninth head coach.
As the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens for the past two seasons, Macdonald built one of the best defenses in the NFL. At 36 years old, he is the NFL’s youngest head coach.
Macdonald and his wife, Stephanie, were met by team members when they got to the Virginia Mason Athletic Centre. “What an honor,” he said. “We’re really thrilled to be here. Pete Carroll has been the head coach for the Seahawks for 14 seasons. Macdonald will take over the job from Carroll and will be responsible for helping the team move forward while also keeping a positive attitude within the team, as general manager John Schneider explained earlier this month.

Macdonald began coaching at Cedar Shoals High School in Georgia while he was still a student at the University of Georgia. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a famous defense innovator. That got him promoted at Georgia, and then he went to work as an intern coach for the Ravens in the NFL. Following that, Macdonald worked his way up to become the defensive backs coach and then the linebackers coach. In 2021, he became the defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan.

Macdonald came back to the Ravens as their defensive coordinator in 2022 after one season at Michigan. He was immediately successful, as the Ravens were ranked third in scoring defense (18.5 points per game), third in run defense (92.1 yards per game), third in red zone defense (46.4 percent), and fourth in third-down defense (34.9). The defense was even better in 2023, with four All-Pros (Queen, linebacker Roquan Smith, safety Kyle Hamilton, and defensive tackle Justin Madubuike). This helped the Ravens win the AFC’s top seed with a 13-4 record.
