1. Find ideas
You might already have an idea of how you want your room to look. It’s possible that you have no idea. It’s fine either way. One of the fun things about designing rooms is getting ideas from other styles and trends to see what will work in your own home.
The founders and principals of Very Handsome Studio in Houston, Vy Truong and Han Dang, get ideas from their trips. But everyone has a different source of ideas. Together with their hotel and apartment block clients, they “develop a well-crafted story, personified by their experience or the core values of their business.”

Not sure where to find your story? Seek ideas in the world around you. “Ideas for design can be found almost anywhere,” says Amy Youngblood, Principal of Amy Youngblood Interiors and a designer from Cincinnati. “We love to get design ideas from restaurants and hotels. Just look around and see what you like and don’t like.” Check out different lighting options and colours to find the ones that make you feel more alive and at ease.
Youngblood also says that Pinterest is a great place to get design ideas for your house. Set up different boards to “pin” design ideas that will help you with your own work. If you don’t already have an account, make one.
2. Figure out what you want to do with the space.
Yes, there are places that are already set up to do a specific job, like the kitchen, bathroom and home office. However, how do you still want the room to work and flow? Would you like your kitchen to be a place where friends and family can hang out while you cook? Would you like your bathroom to look like a peaceful haven like a high-end spa? Plan your space in this way.

Do you just want your home office to be a place to work, or do you also want it to be a place that will impress your coworkers when they see what’s behind you in virtual meetings? After you answer these questions, you’ll have a better idea of how to set up the room.
3. Pick out an anchor element
What does the name suggest? An anchor feature is something that holds the room together. It could be a desk in a home office or a couch sofa in the living room. It could even be a beautiful piece of wall art that sets the tone for the rest of the colours in the room.
Youngblood says, “An anchor piece can help because it gives you a place to start when you’re designing a room.” “Choose a piece that you love very much and build your project around it.” A chair, a rug, or a work of art could all be anchor pieces. “After that, you can pick out the style, colours, and other pieces that go with it,” she says.
4. Pick out a set of colours
If your centre piece is a certain colour, you could use that colour to help you decide which colours to use in the rest of the room. For a one-color look, you could just arrange your room in different shades of your favourite colour. You could also make sure that every colour of the rainbow is shown somewhere in the area.
Remind yourself that you don’t have to paint your walls a bright colour. You can also add colour to the room with art and home decor. Not sure what colour goes well with what? Like the pros, use a colour wheel.
5. Pick out and arrange furniture
Not only does furniture give you a place to sit and relax, but the way you order it also affects how the room flows and is laid out, especially if you have an open-concept floor plan. Figure out what’s important to you, like having nice seating, enough storage space, and something that will last, and then shop with those things in mind.
But don’t drop your standards just because it looks good. These days, there are a lot of soft clothes that you can change the way they look by adding different fabrics.
6. Come up with a lighting plan
It doesn’t have to be as hard to design lighting for your home as it is for a theatre show. But if you’d rather not have to fumble around in the dark, you’ll need to make sure your area has enough light. This can be fixed lighting like track lighting or ceiling fans with lights, or it can be individual lamps set on surfaces like desks or end tables.
The brightness of a place can also change how it feels. Lights that are brighter would be better in a hobby room or home office. Lights that are dimmer would be better in the living room, especially for movie nights. Also, keep in mind that cool lighting (bright white lights) and warm lighting (bulbs that give off a yellow tint) look different. Think about how you’ll use the room again, and make sure it has enough light so you can get the most out of it.
